More Straight to Colors references

Hi guys!
I'm pride and honored to be an instructor at the symposium.
I've been working hard to be better prepared for you!

I'd like to share some more examples of the technique and concept I will introduce in my workshop.
In this first post, I want to show some studies of trees using markers. I think this technique is great for doing that.
You can try 'suggesting' the foliage, instead of 'describing' it, and creating a ground tone where you are going to add the darker values step by step, over it.
In these fist two images I worked in this direction. Actually, they're the same sketch as you can see. The top image shows the sketch exactly how I finished it on the spot.
Later, I realized that I should have made it simpler! One of the ways of doing that could be reducing the tonal range. I achieve this by adding a darker mid-tone later. This new layer helped to merge everything - that made the image more easily comprehensive.
In the first one, although I used masses of colors, the result was more descriptive than in the second one.

Now, I want to show you another examples of trees that I have recently done:

The example above shows a less detailed result (a much faster sketch), but I really like it. You can see that there is no contour at all - even the corner of the building in the distance is missing. I like the movement of the masses close to the statue. You can see a couple sat right there...well, the 'appearance' of them...
The great watercolorist Joseph Zbukvic once said: "Indicate, don't state".
In the sketch above, I did the same process but I was even more focused. I use a soft tone (a pale indigo) to start landing the shapes. Look at the people on the left bottom.

That's it for today.
Keep coming and please, let's talk about it. Share your comments and ideas.

Até breve.
Eduardo

  1. Hello Eduardo,
I couldn't be more excited to take your workshop and meet you. I absolutely love your drawings and can tell I have so much to learn from you. I agree with you and love the quick sketch with no contours. It is stunning. I get a great sense of light from it, and the drawings "breathe". Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hello Scott!

I am really glad you are taking my workshop! I think that working in this concept is a powerful tool! This is what I want to share with you.
I also like the light in the last one - or should I say: the absense of light? Well, that day was pretty cloudy, so no shadows at all (although that is a dark curved shape in the building which suggest a shadow...actually it is not, it was something inside the building. If I would have noticed this on the spot I would probably omit this). Always good to think about our own stuff. Thanks! Keep in touch.

  3. Hi Eduardo,

I am extremely thrilled to be taking your workshop. I have just one small question, what paper are we gonna be using? Our own watercolor paper sketchbooks? Or should we bring some sort of bristol or a marker paper? Thank you very much.

  4. Hi Luis,
Thank you very much for your enthusiasm...
You might use your own sketchbook, or loose sheets of paper in case you don't feel confident about the results. I usually sketch with markers in my sketchbooks...any kind. I've already used watercolor moleskines - I like the way markers work in this kind of paper.
    Cheers!

  6. Hi Liz...Thanks for your reply. Yes, I've always worked like this before too("colouring in"). I've discoreved this whole new world recently ("massing"), and I'm feeling excited to share my thoughts about it.
    Thanks again,
    Eduardo

  7. You can choose the standard by seeing 카지노 which particular builders are concerned and the quantity of different games on provide. Another popular bonus to look out for is the ‘no deposit bonus’. These bonuses offer you a check of the on line casino while not having to deposit any funds. It might come within the form of free spins or credit score added to your account. The scores of the most-followed matches across popular championships are pinned on the positioning as properly, providing you with the information you would possibly need to make future betting choices.
