Symposium participant: James Richards

I'm beside myself with anticipation of the Santo Domingo experience! I'm Jim Richards; I'm a landscape architect and urban designer in Fort Worth.  I'm a board member of Urban Sketchers, coordinator of Urban Sketchers Texas, and gave a lecture at the Lisbon symposium called "The Freehand Renaissance."  I've just completed almost a year of intense work on my first book, Freehand Drawing and Discovery: Urban Sketching and Concept Drawing for Designers, which is scheduled to be released in January, and I am ready for some travel!

The Lisbon symposium was a fantastic adventure.  The thought of combining the fun, learning and camaraderie of that experience with the exotic locale of Santo Domingo is amazing.  When I arrive in Santo Domingo I will have just completed a three-week study/sketching trek in Brazil and Peru--my first visit to South America--so my hand and pen should be ready.  I look forward to seeing you all and drawing together!  Orling, where is the best mojito in Santo Domingo?

Richard Serra's monumental sculpture "Vortex," at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art a few short blocks from my house.

The Bosphorus River waterfront in Istanbul.

The Spanish Steps, Rome.

The Ducros House, circa 1840, sketched two days ago in Thibodeaux Louisiana.

  1. Jim, you just gave me a big homework :-) I am not a drink expert but I'll make sure to find out about the mojitos before your arrival. Have a safe trip and keep us posted on your steps through South America.

  2. Orling, you have PLENTY to do, so don't add this to your list...I can personally lead a mojito expedition after arriving! I will post from South America as often as I can!

    1. I'm ready to be inspired by your energy, Inma! I think about you most days because your napkin sketch of Patrizia is framed just inside the front door of my house! Really looking forward to seeing you.

    1. Thanks Eduardo! Most of the time will be in Rio and the surrounding area, seeing projects by Roberto Burle Marx. We will only be in Sao Paulo one or two days. We'll be staying with a friend and classmate of mine, Sergio Santana, who is a landscape architect in Sao Paulo. He loves to draw and, in fact, he has asked me to bring him some new sketching supplies! Hopefully there will be time to contact you for a drink. Looking forward to reconnecting with you in Santo Domingo!

    2. I love Burle Marx design. Are you visiting his farm? I heard it's beautiful.
In Sao Paulo we have a park he designed - it is called Parque Burle Marx.
I met Sergio once. He was the landscape designer of one job I got a few years ago (I made illustrations for the project).
So, if you have some time to spend here, send me an email, but I know we are always if plenty of things to do when travelling.

      Abraço!

    3. Yes, we are visiting Burle Marx's farm and studio--that is the part of the trip I am most looking forward to. One of my only regrets as a professional was that I didn't get a chance to meet him while he was alive. Sergio knew him well; in fact Burle Marx gave Sergio a large painting of his.

  6. Great drawings, Jim.
Jorge Royan (USK3 Participant) here. I just posted 4 drawings in the blog.
I began sketching a year ago, and learned a lot from some guys in USK, one being you.
Thank you for uploading the drawings full size. I took my time analyzing them, as the ones by Nina, Will, Luis Ruiz and Gerard Michel.
I hope I get to meet you there.
    Bye
